Well...there ARE differences, but if you know what you're doing,
you can take award winning photos with even the cheapest ass lenses
and cameras. 
Its quite hard to explain really, but when you look at prints, even
your own, chances are you can't tell which was taken with your
expensive lens and which one with the cheap lens.
And you can take really horrible pictures with 10 thousand dollar
cameras too.
